Remote programming: ‘new people, new challenges’

Virtual Mobility in Automation and Electrical Engineering – December 2020 – January 2021

Ten students from the German Vocational school for Metal- Design- Mechatronics (BSMDM) and the Spanish Armeria Eskola took the challenge of automating the assembly process of small pneumatic parts by programming a Mitsubishi robot… remotely.

Motivated to meet new people and learn how to program and do maintenance work at a distance, students from Armeria Eskola met their partners online in a live session and sent them information about the process: electrical-pneumatic schemes, instructions for inputs and outputs to be used, robot points and process grafcet. After analyzing the details, the German students developed the robot program and sent it to Armeria Eskola ready to be installed.

Together they discussed and performed the final adjustments to test and debug the program. They recorded a video of the robot performance and wrote a conclusions report.

According to the students themselves, practicing general and technical English, learning about a different culture and solving job-relevant tasks with foreign colleagues were the major takeways from the project. The main challenge for the collaborative work was making themselves understood when ‘communicating through a screen’ and ‘speaking in English all the time’.
